Alex was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1925. He fled Nazi Germany to the United States in May of 1938 with his sister Judy and parents Mina and Mendel. A graduate of Stuyvesant High School in New York City, he was drafted into the US Army in March 1944, serving in the 99th Infantry “Checkerboard” Division. He survived the Battle of the Bulge, earning a Bronze Star for bravery for volunteer radio surveillance missions behind enemy lines. He was a post-war translator in the Nuremberg trials.
He earned his B.B.A. from City College of the City University of New York and joined his father’s small manufacturing business, ultimately growing it significantly in its scope and success. He retired in 1999, which left him more time to enjoy his family, read his beloved New York Times, and resume violin lessons. He moved from Great Neck, NY, to Chapel Hill, NC, in 2013.
A man of great kindness, selflessness and generosity of spirit, he loved nature, skiing, hiking, history, politics and classical music. He is survived by his adored and cherished wife of 60 years, Ann, children Peter Branden (Pennie), Leslie Branden-Muller (Eric), grandchildren Jonathan and Ariel Branden and Abby and Nina Muller, and sister Judy Mann.
