Alta May Powers Smith

Durham Mrs. Alta May Powers Smith, 89, of Durham, died on Sunday, January 6, 2013.Mrs. Smith was born and raised in the Lowes Grove Community, to the late Gideon Ellis Powers and Beulah Hawkins Keith Powers. She was a homemaker and a member of the Bethesda Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Robert Smith,Sr. in 1997.She is survived by her son, Fred R. Smith, Jr. of Durham; two daughters, Shirley Price and husband, Tommy of Durham and Rebecca Parker and husband, Ellis of Chocowinity, N.C.; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Powers; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Rev. Hugh O’Shields will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Joshua Smith, Benjamin Smith, Eric Parker, Aaron Price, William Price and Gideon Powers III. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home.
