DURHAM Mrs. Bettie Virginia Jones O’Shields, 64, of Durham went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 16, 2015, after courageous battle with cancer.
Mrs. O’Shields was born in Wake County to the late Walter Bryce Jones and Mary Hudson House Jones. She graduated from Cary High School, Mars Hill College, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, NC Central University and NC State University. Her highest degree completed was her Graduate Certificate from NC State University. She taught Middle School at Lowe’s Grove Middle School for 29 years, and was a certified Home Economist. She won several teaching awards. She was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church. Bettie taught Sunday School for many years, was active in mission work around the globe, a member of the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) and volunteered with Samaritan’s Purse-Operation Christmas Child. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and was called “Gecko” by all 9 of her grandchildren and many others.
She is survived by her husband, Elford Hugh O’Shields III; son, Robert Gordon O’Shields; two daughters, Kellie O’Shields Webster and husband, Bryan and Kyla O’Shields Phipps and husband, Bradley; 9 grandchildren, Bryce, Sean, and Georgia O’Shields, Micah, Rachel, Jacob and Andrew Webster and Zachary and Kayleigh Phipps.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Ridgecrest Baptist Church, Durham, NC. Dr. Marc Francis, Rev. Tim Wheeler, Rev. John Butler and Dr. Clay Stevens will participate. Burial will be in the Olive Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorial donations may be made to the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, payable to IMB, notating it for “Lottie Moon,” and send it to: IMB DEVELOPMENT, P.O. Box 6767, Richmond, VA 23230. The family would like to thank the staff at Hock Family Pavilion for their care of Bettie during her illness.
