DURHAM-Betty Winters Carthen, 77, of Durham died on Saturday, November 19, 2011. She was the daughter of the late Claude Winters and Kate Nelms Winters. Mrs. Carthen retired from Liggett & Myers as a machine operator. She attended Ridgecrest Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her step-son, Ken Carthen.She is survived by her husband, J.T. Carthen, one son, Johnny Langdon (JoAnn), two daughters, Dianne Langdon and Wendy Dixon, three step-daughters, Deena O’Neal (Mike), Terry Spence (Ben), and Toni Barrett (Mike), two sisters, Ann Rich (Connie), Pat Garrett (Marvin), eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Ridgecrest Baptist Church. Rev. Mark Frances will officiate. Burial will be in Community Memorial Gardens, Stem, N.C. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at the home.
