Betty Johnson Hall, 77, of Durham, NC, began her heavenly journey on June 28, 2020 at Duke Hospice-Hock Family Pavilion. Betty was a lifelong resident of Durham and a member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church. Her Sunday School classmates were a vital part of her church life.
She was a loving wife to Al Hall, Jr. (deceased) and his partner in business with Reams Aircraft Services until his death in 1990. Al coined her nickname – “BR” – a term of endearment used by family and friends.
Betty’s strong love for her family and her commitment to community were well known.
Betty has two children, Mike and Cindy. When her children attended grammar school, she left her position at Beaunit Fibers in the Research Triangle Park and devoted her energies to their upbringing.
Although her efforts may have been labeled as housewife, she was much more. While raising her children, she kept close ties to all of her brothers, sisters and their extended families. Her home was a welcoming one to everyone; especially, her kids’ friends. Many joyous events were held there and were immensely enjoyed by all.
She took an active role at Oak Grove Athletic Association and grade parent during her children’s elementary years. She served several years as a voting precinct poll worker. She really immersed herself as a companion to Mary White at The Forest at Duke Continuing Care Retirement Community in conjunction with her dear friend Ruth Bowen.
As most often happens with parents, grandchildren bring an immense renewal of joy. Betty had a profound sense of pride and new reasons for giving and nurturing when she became a grandmother.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Virgie Johnson; brothers, David Johnson, R.B. Johnson, Kenneth Johnson, and Larry Johnson; and sisters, Louise Tyler, Carol Heider, Brenda Johnson, Sharon Johnson, Gloria Johnson.
She is survived by her son, Mike A. Hall (Kim) of Durham; daughter, Cindy Darity (Don)) of Raleigh; brothers, Billy Johnson (Rhonda) of Creedmoor, NC, Tommy Johnson (Betty) of Henderson, NC, Earl Johnson (Pat) of Durham, NC, and Curt Johnson (Janie) of Butner, NC; sisters, Mary Johnson Stephenson of Durham, NC, Nettie Cox of Rougemont, NC, Linda West (Dean) of Rougemont, NC, and Pam Johnson of Roxboro, NC; grandchildren, Justin Hall (Christina) of Durham; Morgan Lee (Tyler) of Fort Mill, SC; great-grandchild Piper June Hall and granddog Frisco Banks.
The family thanks the staff of Duke Regional Hospital’s floor 5-3, Duke Medicine Pavilion 8 West, Central Tower 2nd floor, and Duke Hospice at Hock Pavilion for their care.
