Betty “Jean” Lender Miles

Mrs. Betty Jean (Lender) Miles, of the Rosewood Health Center at The Cypress of Raleigh, located in Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.

Born September 4, 1925, in Irvona, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Frank G. Lender and Bessie Lord Lender. On June 16, 1947, she married the late W. Dean Miles at the Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. Mr. Miles died on September 7, 1973.

Mrs. Miles assisted with administrative duties in her husband’s business, Dean Miles Body Shop, in Coalport, Pennsylvania, until his death. She then worked until her retirement as the office manager and hearing specialist for Dr. Augusto N. Delerme, M.D., at his offices in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Miles lived in Altoona from 1976 until she relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina, in 2008. She enjoyed traveling and took several trips abroad with her son, daughter, and granddaughters. She also enjoyed spending time with the many new neighbors and friends she made in Raleigh.

She was a 1943 graduate of the Coalport-Irvona High School.

Mrs. Miles was a member of the Coalport Pennsylvania Chapter, No. 427, of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Altoona Pennsylvania Chapter, Dorcas Temple No. 129, of the Daughters of the Nile. Mrs. Miles was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Irvona, Pennsylvania.

Surviving are her daughter, Deanna Miles (Charles Gern) Peters of Warren, Pennsylvania, her son Edward Dean Miles (Jonathan Woody) of Raleigh, North Carolina; two granddaughters, Heather Peters Egizio of Portland, Oregon, and Margaret Peters (Kyle) Sturm of Portland, Oregon; two great-grandchildren, Kate Harper Sturm and Jack Alexander Sturm also of Portland, Oregon; and numerous loving nephews and nieces and their families. She is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Mr. Glenn E. Shope of Irvona, Pennsylvania, and Mr. Russell Vivian of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania.

As well as her husband and parents, Mrs. Miles was also preceded in death by her brother, Edward J. Lender and his wife Louise, and her sister, Mrs. Bertha Lender Shope.

The family will be receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at The Stevens Mortuary, 1421 8th Avenue in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Funeral services are planned to be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, June 2, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. There will also be a memorial service for Mrs. Miles at The Cypress of Raleigh to be held at a later date to be announced by the family.

A private interment will follow the services at the Utahville Cemetery, in Utahville, Pennsylvania.

At this time, the family would like to thank and express their gratitude to the medical and professional staff at The Rosewood Health Center, at the Cypress of Raleigh, especially to Dr. Steven M. Leibowitz, M.D., Dottie Wallin, Katharine Ward, Meredith Williams, Allison Neal and Gloria Taal for their faithful and dedicated care of Mrs. Miles during her lengthy illness.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the American Cancer Society; the American Heart Association; the American Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of personal choice.
