BYRDDURHAM Mr. Billy Sherman Byrd, 77, of 927 Junction Road, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 24, 2011.Mr. Byrd was a native and lifelong resident of Durham, the son of the late William Chester Byrd and Sally Ivey Byrd. He served in the N.C. National Guard from 1952 to 1992 and Desert Storm. He was made Honorary Sheriff in 2006. He was a member of the American Legion Post 7 and a member of the Lighthouse Church of God. He was a devoted Christian and humanitarian, a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Annie Lorae Byrd, daughters, Teresa McCabe and husband, Don of New York, Pamela Andrews and husband, Mike of Durham and Marlene Brown and husband, Doug of Durham; grandchildren, Brett Andrews, (Brittney Hardiman), Donald McCabe III, Kelsey McCabe, Joshua Brown and Savannah McCabe and sisters, Gloria Jean Jeffries and Mary Ann Boone. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Betty Lou Byrd, William Byrd and nephew, James Lamar Byrd.Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM. at the Lighthouse of God at 1011 Junction Road. Rev. Douglas Brown, Rev. Willie Teachey and Rev. Kevin Barbour will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Mike Andrews, Brett Andrews, Don McCabe, Donald McCabe III, Joshua Brown, Rev. Douglas Brown, Jeff Murray and George Murray. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Durham County Sheriff’s Office and of the 731st N.C. National Guard, Maintenance Company.The family will receive friends on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at the home, 927 Junction Road. Flowers are acceptable.
