Chester Devereaux Turner

DURHAM- Mr. Chester Devereaux Turner, 90, passed away Monday, May 29, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.Mr. Turner was born in Hillsborough, NC on September 1, 1926. Mr. Turner served his country in the United States Navy as a Seaman First Class during World War II. He also was in the Boy Scouts Troop 240. Mr. Turner worked 26 years for American Tobacco Company. Mr. Turner was a member of the “Order of the Arrow” cook team. Mr. Turner enjoyed fishing and gardening. He has been a member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church since 1973. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great- grandfather and friend to all. Mr. Turner is preceded in death by his wife, Hilda Thomas Turner; parents, James and Callie Turner; brothers, James “JD” Devereaux Turner, James Devereaux Turner, John Edward Turner, Robert Allen Turner, James Harlie Turner; sisters, Maude Lee Turner, Callie Mildred Turner, Virginia Dare Turner, Lelia Irene Turner; granddaughter, Kristy Thomas.Mr. Turner is survived by his sons, Ronnie Turner (Tammy) of Durham, Wade Thomas (Marie) of Oxford; grandchildren, David Turner (Michele), John Turner (Angela), Dottie Freeman (Ronnie), Micah Turner, Nikki Pittman (Chad), Angie Pridgen; great-grandchildren, Chris, Levi, Jeremie, Alex, Gemma, Emerson, Brooklyn, and Ashleigh (Gustavo); great-great grandchildren, Adan, Liam, and Abel.Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 1, 2017 at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Ed Denton and Dr. Gerald Goodwin. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home.
