Clara Bailey Layton

DURHAM- Mrs. Clara Bailey Layton, 91, passed away Thursday March 16, 2017.
Mrs. Layton was born March 4, 1926 in Wake County to the late DeWitt Bailey and Daisy Barbee Bailey. She was a graduate of Bethesda High School and Louisburg College. Mrs. Layton was a longtime member of Bethesda Baptist Church, a member of the Martha Sunday School Class, the Prime Timers, and served for many years in the church nursery. She worked with the Department of Public Instruction in Raleigh prior to the birth of her children. She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Mrs. Layton is preceded in death by her parents DeWitt and Daisy Bailey; son, Trent L. Layton; sister, Frances Ennis Hall; grandchildren, Jennifer Layton and Bailey Layton; daughter in laws, Patricia Layton and Sophie Layton.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years Ernest “Buck” Layton; son, Talmage Layton (Sandra), Doug Layton (Fredia), and Joe Layton (Gayle); granddaughters, Tracy Garrett (Ronnie), Tammy Thaggard (Michael), Corey Smith (J.T.); grandsons, Justin Layton (Sarah) and Trent Layton; great-grandchildren, Kristan, Anna, and Thomas Garrett, Michael and Cameron Thaggard, Makayla Smith, Carson Layton and other loving family members and friends.
Serving as pallbearers will be Trent Layton, Justin Layton, J.T. Smith, Ronnie Garrett, Thomas Garrett, Michael Thaggard, Jr., and Michael Thaggard III.
A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until noon on Monday, March 20, 2017 at Bethesda Baptist Church with the funeral service to follow at 12:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Officiating will be pastors Tim Wheeler and Kris Dekker.
