David Andrew Hughes, 56, of Wirtz, VA, passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2024, after a courageous battle with Interstitial Lung Diseases at Duke University Hospital. He always maintained a positive attitude and never lost his kindness and caring nature for others. He was born on August 12, 1968, in Welch, West Virginia to Billy and Norma Jean Hughes.
David was a lover of Western Wear, and spent the last 3 ½ years as the Manger at Boot Barn in Roanoke, VA. He loved to model his boots and enjoyed his own personal western collection. Making it difficult to choose what to wear and which pair of boots to leave the house in.
David had a smile that could light up any room. His brown eyes, smile, and presence would make anyone feel happy and content. He also enjoyed cooking and making delicious meals for family and friends to gather. However, if there was anything he anticipated most it was Christmas, a time where he could plan, cook, share, and enjoy the most beautiful time of the year with his family.
David was and will always be an inspiration to everyone; he will never know how many people he inspired with his positive attitude and wonderful spirit. David knew his scriptures like the back of his hand. One of his favorites was: Psalms 18:2 “The Lord is my rock and fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” He always put other people first, demonstrating kindness and genuine love for those around him.
David will be truly missed by everyone blessed to have known him. He will be remembered as a loving partner, son, brother, family man and friend.
David Hughes is preceded in death by his father, Billy Andrew Hughes.
He is survived by his lifelong partner and soulmate of 26 years, Clayton Allen Betts; mother, Norma Jean Hughes; daughters, Cynthis Giglio (Joe) and Kristi Fisher (Anthony); sister, Pam Jones (David); brothers, Jim Hughes (Robin) and Bruce Hughes (Karen); grandchildren, Gabriel “Tater” Zank and Morgan “MoeMoe” Fisher; beloved dogs, Cysco and Buddie and many nieces and nephews. Goodbyes are not forever; goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean I’ll miss you until we meet again.
Celebration of Life Services will be held a later date in Virginia and West Virginia.
In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests planting a tree in David’s memory.
