DURHAM Mrs. Doris Nifong Pledger, 91, formerly of Durham, died in Flat Rock, North Carolina on Friday, December 06, 2013.
She was born on November 28, 1922, the eldest daughter of four children born to Samuel Lacy and Verona Moseley Nifong. She spent most of her life in Durham where she was educated in the Durham County Schools. She also attended Drake Business College in New York City.
She married Alton Carroll Pledger on December 25, 1941 in Durham. They had two children; son, Drew Trent Pledger and daughter, Sharman Dee Pledger.
She was a charter member of Braggtown Baptist Church and took part in a number of church functions. At Parkview Baptist Church she was president of her Sunday School class and was president of the Joy Sunday School class at Hendersonville First Baptist Church. She opened her home many times so these groups could gather for their devotions.
Doris was a charter member of the Durham Opti-Mrs. Club and served as president and North Carolina District Lieutenant Governor and District Governor. She graciously gave of her time to the cancer, heart, polio, and other health agencies. She joined the Kiwanis Club of Hendersonville making her and Carroll the only husband and wife members of this club.
She participated with Carroll in the Democratic party and served on precinct committees many times. She also was Registrar for the Club Blvd. precinct in Durham.
In her youth, she was the “most popular” at her school and that vivacious character remained with her throughout her life. She treasured the fact that she met Carroll in high school and his first remarks to her were he was “glad to meet my wife”
As a homemaker, mother, friend and loved one Doris had no equal. She remains one of God’s most treasured children and love abounds by those who knew her.
She is survived by her son, Drew Trent Pledger and wife Virginia of Knightdale; daughter, Sharman Dee Norman and husband, Mike of Hendersonville; three grandchildren, Kyndal Norman, Spenser Norman and Kate Lundy and three great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends on Saturday, prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
