Dorothy J. Ferrell

Dorothy Jones Ferrell, age 98, passed away on March 5, 2025 at TerraBella Senior Living Center in Durham, NC. Dorothy was born in Morrisville, NC on November 11, 1926 to the late Arthur Lee Jones Sr. and Jennie Helen Wynne. In addition to her parents she was proceeded in death by her husband John Warren Ferrell, her brothers Lee and Jim Jones, step father John Wynne and step sister and brother Charlotte Mayor and John Wynne Jr.

The family moved to Durham where Dorothy attended Lowes Grove School. She was a member of Lowes Grove Baptist Church where she was very active in the children’s ministry. She and her sister in-law, Bert Ferrell, owned and operated Le Dawns in Durham, a very successful ladies clothing store.

After retiring, Dorothy enjoyed spending her time sewing and doing all kinds of hand crafts. She also had a passion for baking and cooking for family, especially Sunday meals, which often included her famous pound cake. She always kept her door open and her candy jar filled.

Dorothy is survived by her four children; Helen Ferrell DeLoatche (Brantley), Wanda Ferrell Hutson (David), Lowell Ferrell (Donna), and Lisa Ferrell Turner, seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, her sister in-law Sally Jones, and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at Lowes Grove Baptist Church on Saturday, March 15th, 2025, at 12:00 P.M. with Dr. Robert Wortham of Berea Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 11:00-12:00 at the church. A private family burial will follow at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lowes Grove Baptist Church, 4430 S. Alston Avenue, Durham, NC 27713.
