DURHAM Mr. Douglas Brown Nelson, 73, of Durham, died on Monday, January 18, 2016.
Mr. Nelson was born in Hackensack, N.J. to the late Robert Brown Nelson and Annette Wills Ackerman. He proudly served in the U. S. Marine Corps and his decorations included the Vietnam Service Medal, USMC Commendation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He retired in December 2015 from Peak Swirles and Cavallito Properties. He also was a manufacturing representative for Green Roof Industry. He was past president of the Stamford Historical Society in Stamford, Connecticut and past president of a HOA in Durham. He was an avid sailor on the Long Island Sound and loved dogs and gardening.
He is survived by his life partner of 39 years, Gilbert “Gil” Wheless, Jr.; brother, Donald W. Nelson and wife, Carol; twin brother, Dennis H. Nelson and wife, Leila; sister, Deborah Adamson and husband, Doug; niece, Kristin Verrill; nephew, Greg Nelson and many loving friends.
A private family service will be held. Rev. Jeanette Stokes will officiate. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at his home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MDS Foundation at www.mds-foundation.org. Online condolences can be made at www.hudsonfuneralhome.com
