DURHAM-Allen David Roses, MD, FRCP (Hon-Lon), 73, of Durham passed away on Friday, September 30, 2016. Dr. Roses was a world-renowned neurologist, geneticist, wine aficionado, and global leader in drug research and development. He was the son of the late Morris Roses and Ceil Schwartz Roses in Paterson, NJ. He was Chief of Neurology for over 27 years and the Jefferson-Pilot Distinguished Professor of Neurobiology and Neurology at Duke University Medical Center. In addition, Dr. Roses was Senior Vice President of Research and Development at GlaxoSmithKline for 10 years. Dr. Roses was also the owner and Chief Executive of Zinfandel Pharmaceuticals, Inc., running an Alzheimer’s Disease prevention clinical trial. In Durham, Dr. Roses was an avid fan of Duke Men’s Basketball, with season tickets for 44 years, Chairman of the American Dance Festival, and a founding member of Judea Reform Congregation. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force as an MD in Vietnam and marched against the war in Washington, DC. Dr. Roses graduated Summa Cum Laude with Phi Beta Kappa honors from the University of Pittsburgh and earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He was Duke University Medical Center’s first Chief Resident in Neurology.
He is survived by his wife and partner in neuroscience Ann Saunders; daughters, Maija Roses, Stephanie Roses, Joanna Roses Ryan, Michelle Roses Holleman; sister, Estelle Irizarry; grandchildren, Jillian Ridlehoover, Sarah Ridlehoover, Connor Ryan and Cameron Ryan.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Judea Reform Congregation, 1933 West Cornwallis Rd., Durham, NC 27705. Rabbi Larry Bach will officiate. Burial will be at Judea Reform Congregation Cemetery, 2560 Jones Ferry Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.
