DURHAM Mrs. Elizabeth “Sis” Ray, 89, of Durham, died on Tuesday, July 14, 2015.
Mrs. Ray was native and lifelong resident of Durham, daughter of the late William Gus George and Eliza King George. She retired after 51 years with Liggett-Myers Tobacco Company in packing operations. She was a member of Angier Avenue Baptist Church and a past member of Ruth Bible Class. She raised her grandson, Tommy Averitt, who has lived with her since he was 5 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hilman D. Ray, brothers, Bill, Donnie, Coky George and sister, Fannie Johnson.
She is survived by her daughter, Helen C. “Cookie” Averitt and husband, Wayne of Durham; three grandchildren, Tommy Averitt, Dwayne Averitt and Doug Averitt and wife, Kim; great-grandchildren, Nick and Josh Averitt; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Pallbearers will be the employees of Hudson Funeral Home. Rev. Jack Moody will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, 2001 Wentz Drive. Flowers are acceptable. Online condolences may be made to www.hudsonfuneralhome.com.
