DURHAM Mrs. Foye Stephens Isaacs, 98, of 3011 Alabama Ave, died on Tuesday, August 5, 2014.
Mrs. Isaacs was a native and lifelong resident of Durham, the daughter of the late Paul Thomas Stephens and Ida Mae Murdoch Stephens. She retired from the U. S. Army Research Office, Research Triangle Park in May 1977. While employed with the federal government for 33 years, she received numerous certificates and awards. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and her home church was Carr United Methodist Church. She was active for many years in church and Sunday school, serving as class treasurer and a member of the XYZ seniors group. Also, volunteered with the American Red Cross for 25 years, life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary (VFW), Post 2740. She served as president for two years, 1993-1995 and has been secretary since June 2000. She was awarded a medallion as Secretary of the Year 2002-2003, for the 6th District. She was a member of the American Legion, Post 7, a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Chapter 566. Served as president for two years and was awarded in Honorary Life Membership by National Headquarters. She was member of the Durham Twirlers Square Dance Club and held the office of president for two years. She was a life member of the Durham Council for Senior Citizens and the West Durham Senior Center. She was an avid bridge player and member of Edison Johnson Thursday PM Bridge Club. She was a member of Sons and Daughters of Liberty, Branson Council #9, a patriotic organization, for 60 years, until it disbanded in September 2003. She received the highest honor, which was the state and national councilor (president).
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert A. Hurst and Kenneth H. Jones; her brothers, Sidney Stephens, Earl Stephens and Dave Stephens; sisters, Helen Kelly, Carrie S. Oakley, Dorothy S. Winn, Daphine S. Bridges and Mary S. Pendergrass.
She is survived by her husband, George Olive Isaacs; two daughters, Mary Hurst Elliott and husband, Pete of Oxford and Patsy Hurst Sykes of Conway, SC; brother, Col. George Stephens of Durham; five grandchildren, Teresa Sykes of Pittsboro, Jeff Sykes and wife, Lori of Stem, Andy Sykes and wife, Loretta of Wake Forest, Amanda Stevenson and husband, Jeff of Oxford and Stephen Elliott and wife, Lisa of Oxford and six great-grandchildren, Zachary T. Stevenson, Caitlin S. Little, Blake J. Sykes, Jordan D. Elliott, Chase G. Elliott and Kelly J. Sykes.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Rev. Jason Leonard will officiate.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12:30 to 2 p.m., before the service at Hudson Funeral Home. Active pallbearers will be Stephen Elliott, Jeff Sykes, Andy Sykes, Jordan Elliott, Chase Elliott, Blake Sykes and Zachary Stevenson.
