DURHAM- Frank B. Oakley, Jr., age 92, passed away peacefully, Saturday, May 30, 2015, while a patient in the Hospice Unit at Durham VA Medical Center. Mr. Oakley was the son of Frank B. Oakley, Sr. and Cara Horton Oakley. He was a Durham native and soldier in the United States Army and served his country in WWll. He retired from the Durham Fire Department in 1975 after 34 years.
Mr. Oakley was a lifelong member of Lowes Grove Baptist Church in Durham and loved his church. He was a devoted member of the young Men’s Bible Class and also a loyal member of the American Legion Post 416 for 68 years.
Mr. Oakley was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Barrow Oakley. He is survived by son, David Oakley and wife, Beverly, of Cape Carteret, NC; daughter, Cheryl Conway and husband, Don of Oxford; grandson, Willie Conway and wife Kara of Creedmoor; and great-granddaughter, Courtney Conway of Stem, NC.
Services will be held Tuesday, June 2, at 11:00 a.m. at Lowes Grove Baptist Church with a visitation prior to the service at the church beginning @ 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Lowes Grove Cemetery. Dr. Gerald Goodwin and Rev. Forest Gale will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Johnnie High, Jerry Goodwin, Larry Strickland, Steve Strickland, Felton Adams and John Madren. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Young Men’s Bible Class along with members of American Legion Post 416.
