Garland Lonnie Cates

DURHAM- Mr. Garland Lonnie Cates, 80, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Cates was born January 3, 1937 in Durham, NC to the late Lonnie and Jewel Cates. He attended Durham Public Schools. Mr. Cates worked with the Environmental Protection Agency for over 30 years where he retired. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and Papa and will be deeply missed by everyone blessed to have known him. Mr. Cates proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Cates is preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Jewel Cates; brothers, Troy and Clinton Cates; sisters, Elpha Smith, and Edith Apple.
Pallbearers will be Kenny Glenn, Roddy Glenn, Tim Johnson, Tom Johnston, David Pendergraft, and Eddie Sanders.
Mr. Cates is survived by his wife of 60 years, Emma Cates; daughters, Karen Whitesell (Buddy), Karla Forehand (Gene); brothers, Jerry and Bobby Cates; grandchildren, Heather Vanderbunt, Brittany Herndon-Pendergraft (David); great-granddaughter, Kinsley Pendergraft.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2017 at Calvary Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Dr. Robby Phillips. Burial will follow at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held Sunday, June 25, 2017 from 4-6 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home.
