DURHAM Mr. Gerald “Jerry” Davis George, 85, of Durham, died on Sunday, February 14, 2016.
Mr. George was a native and lifelong resident of Durham. He was a graduate of Durham High School, where he played football. He served in the U. S. Navy as a Seabee, building bases in Guam. He retired after many years from Long Meadow Dairy / Flav-o-rich, as a diesel mechanic, a trade he learned while serving in the Navy. Mr. George is a member of Calvary Free Will Baptist Church and a former member of Liberty Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and drove the bus for the handicap ministry. He loved salt-water fishing, car racing and won several trophies for boxing and football in the Navy. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Ray George.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betsy George; one daughter, Kyra Lee and husband, Chuck of Mebane; one sister, Betty Lou Gregory of Anderson, SC; two grandchildren, Kelli Lee Powell and Justin Charles Lee; three great-grandchildren, Lily Smith, Kenli Powell and Larkin Lee.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Free Will Baptist Church. Pastor Virgil Nolen and Pastor Guy Owens will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Mack Wills, Reid Addison, Roger Tingen, Tommy Smith, Ken McCormick and Harold Cabe. Honorary pallbearers will be Macon Perry, Ed Frazier, Harold Pollard, Ray Smith, Harold Swann, Tim Harmon, W. D. Bivins and Worth McCorkle Jr..
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at the home.
