Hiram Spencer Hilliard was born in Danville, VA on 5/27/43. He passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2016. Hiram was the 5th of 8 children. His father was Jesse Hiram Hilliard and his biological mother was Cumbia Vass Hilliard who died shortly after his birth. His stepmother, Violet King Hilliard, raised him. Hiram graduated from George Washington High School in 1961 and received an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Vance Granville Community College in 1994. Hiram served in the Air Force during Vietnam War and was part of special honor guard for President Kennedy. His working career consisted of Durham Police Dept., Palm Beach Police Dept. (FL.), Duke University Campus Police, Resident Manager of Caring House for 15 years, and owned the Evaluator Driving Company and retired in 2014. Hiram was also an artist, loved Duke Sports, played Santa at many different events including playing Santa to children in the hospital on Christmas Day for many years and was the Santa in his hometown Danville Christmas Parade and the Caring House. Hiram’s family was first to him. He was known as the fun uncle because of his outgoing personality. He was preceded in death by his previous wife, Beverly Hilliard, siblings, Rudy Hilliard, Peggy Hilliard Keeling, Gary Hilliard, Jean Hilliard Arendall and a granddaughter Lillie who resides with him in heaven.
He is survived by his wife, Tresa, two children, Rodrick Scott Hilliard and Christopher Lee Hilliard, one granddaughter, Arianna. Two children-in-love: Tammy Smith (Larry), and Michelle Boyte (Corey), four grandchildren-in-love: Hayden (Layla), Collin, Hannah and Eva; sisters, Ruby Hilliard McLelland, Joy Hilliard Millner and Joanne Hilliard Turnquist; 19 nephews and nieces, 5 great-great nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. at Bethel Christian Center, 3518 Rose of Sharon Rd. Burial will in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens on Monday, July 18, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.
The family will receive friends on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. one hour prior to the services at Bethel Christian Center. Flowers are acceptable. Online condolences can be made at www.hudsonfuneralhome.com.
