Mr Hyman Marks passed away on August 30th, 2017; he was 92. Born in Brooklyn, NY to Polish Immigrants Samuel and Libby Marks, he later joined the US army, serving as an engineer during WWII. He served honorably and received several medals including a citation for “Valor under enemy fire.” He and his wife Helen actively supported veterans organizations for the rest of his life. Following the war, Hyman returned to NY and it was signed as a singer for Jubilee records, a prominent American jazz label at that time. He recorded several records, sang regularly in the Catskill mountains and elsewhere, and later in life sang on cruise ships. He spent most of his adult life working as a public school teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal. At the same time, he sang professionally as a Cantor at Temple Shalom of Flatbush in Brooklyn NY and later at Judea Reform Congregation in Durham NC. He is predeceased by his older brothers Samuel and Irving Marks. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Helen; his children Stephen Marks of Palm Beach FL, and Lawrence Marks and his wife Caryn Hertz of Chapel Hill NC; grandchildren Noah Marks and fiancé Hannah Schutzengel, Samuel Marks, and Benjamin Marks.
Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 4, 2017 at Judea Reform Congregations Cemetery, 2560 Jones Ferry Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27516. Officiating will be Rabbi Larry Bach.
