Joan Alves McLawhorn

DURHAM Mrs. Joan Alves McLawhorn, 81, of Durham, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 under hospice care.
Mrs. McLawhorn was born in Jamestown, Rhode Island, the daughter of the late Vasco and Nora M. Alves. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Lonnie P “Mac” McLawhorn; six brothers and one sister. She retired from IBM Corp. Joanie was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church, Primetimers and the Martha Sunday School Class and also the Bethesda Ruritan Club.
She is survived by her two daughters, Linda Glenn (Tim) of Burlington and Lisa Goss of Durham; three grandchildren, Becki Grandstaff (Tadd) and Bryan Glenn both of Burlington, Tanner Goss of Durham; four adored great-grandchildren, Brogan Grandstaff, Maisy Grandstaff, Lula Grandstaff, and Keaton Grandstaff.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 4th at 11 a.m. at Bethesda Baptist Church. Rev. Jason Sikes will officiate. Interment will be in Lowes Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
