Johnny Kelly, 93, entered the gates of Heaven on March 17, 2025. He was born May 10, 1931, in Wilmington, North Carolina, to the late L. Winfield Kelly Sr. and Louise Cavenaugh Kelly.
Johnny served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War, reflecting his lifelong sense of duty and honor. In 1966, he and his wife, Ethel Marie Kelly, moved to Durham, North Carolina, where they built a loving home and raised their three sons — Albert Glenn, Franklin Dale, and Timothy Rhodes — over the next 39 years.
Professionally, Johnny worked at Weldon’s Jewelers and later Bristol‑Myers Squibb, retiring after decades of dedicated service. In retirement, he and Ethel relocated to Midlothian, Virginia, to be near their pride and joy, granddaughter Madison Reece Kelly, and he ultimately made his home in Salem, Virginia.
A gifted musician, Johnny served as choir director at West Durham Pentecostal Holiness Church for more than 30 years. He also held key roles at Bethel Christian Center and Victory Tabernacle Church of God, sharing his faith and musical talent generously.
Johnny was predeceased by his siblings; L. Winfield Kelly Jr., Margaret Mason Turner, and Fern Butts; and his first wife of 58 years, Ethel Marie Kelly. He later shared seven happy years with his second wife, Mattie Duncan, who also preceded him in death.
He is survived by his sons and their families:
Albert Glenn Kelly and wife Donna — children Jason Bryan and Courtney Weimer
Franklin Dale Kelly — children Heather Kelly and Tuesday Kelly
Timothy Rhodes Kelly and wife Vivian — daughter Madison Reece Kelly and godson Bryce Gerdeman
Johnny also leaves behind stepsons Robert Duncan (wife Joy) and Keith Duncan (wife Michelle); step‑grandchildren Judah, Angel, Melanie, Noah, and Hannah; and twelve great‑grandchildren.
His legacy of faith, music, and family devotion touched countless lives. He will be remembered for his joyous spirit, his love of music, and his steadfast commitment to sharing God’s love.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Good Samaritan Hospice, The Key, John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home (Salem), Hudson Funeral Home (Durham), and Kenneth Brown of Nana’s Attic (South Hill, VA) for their compassionate care.
