Linwood “Wayne” Jeffries, age 73, of Durham , North Carolina, succumbed to cancer in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his family on January 11, 2020.
Wayne was born in Durham, on November 26, 1946 to Harold and Ruth Jeffries. He attended Durham High School where you could often find him playing sports or pranks on his sisters. He loved all sports, especially basketball, where he surprised people with his agility and lethal jump shot. His love for sports was unwavering, always showing pride for his beloved Duke Blue Devils. He was a hard worker and had many jobs in his life, but none more important than his job as a father to his two children. They were his pride and joy and he never let a day go by that he didn’t tell them that he was proud of them and that he loved them. His life was not an easy one, he battled cancer several times, but he always did it with pure grit and a sense of humor. His laughter and his praise for his grandkids will be missed the most.
He is survived by his children:, Justin (Katie) Jeffries of Summerville, SC; and Jena (Hal) Rhea of Panama City, FL; one sister, Wanda (Jeffries) Westbrook of Durham, NC; three grandchildren, Owen and Sydney Rhea, and Noah Jeffries; his favorite niece Ginger (Snapper) Hester; plus, other nieces and nephews and countless friends. Wayne was a loving and silly father, brother, uncle and friend. He was proceeded in death by his parents, his Aunt Virginia, and his sister Joanne (Jeffries) Ferrell.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 18 at Hudson’s Funeral Home, 211 S. Miami Blvd, Durham, NC 27703. Officiating will be Rev. Hugh O’Shields.
