DURHAM Mrs. Mabel Couch Carpenter Keith, 95, of Durham, died on Wednesday, June 4, 2014.
Mrs. Keith was a native and lifelong resident of Durham, the daughter of the late John Willie Couch and Lola Perry Couch. She graduated from Oak Grove High School. She was a secretary at Oak Grove School in the 1950’s and retired from Duke University Medical Center. She was a member of Cedar Fork Baptist Church where she served as church clerk. She loved to read. She was preceded in death by first husband, Earl Carpenter, Sr., two brothers, Dennis and Jesse Couch; four sisters, Ruth Couch, Elizabeth Carpenter, Bessie Green and Mildred White.
She is survived by her son, Earl Edward Carpenter and wife, Jackie of Durham; daughter, Nancy C. Sawaya of Durham; 6 grandchildren, Earl Carpenter, Laura Adcock, Neal Carpenter, Cathy Berry, Mike Sawaya and George Sawaya and 8 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Ed Denton and Dr. Fred Williams. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m., before the service at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, Nancy Sawaya. Flowers are acceptable.
