Mara Jay Gardner, born on February 22, 1995, in New London, Connecticut, passed away unexpectedly on May 31, 2024, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at the age of 29. Mara is survived by her parents, Kenyatta Upchurch and Kenneth Gardner, and her sister Zoe Vincent; grandparents, William and Lydia Upchurch; and grandmother Alexandra Gardner Nelson. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Tom Gardner.
Mara was a practicing member of the Sangha at the Chapel Hill Zen Center and found peace and enlightenment through her study of Buddhism and meditation. She was a graduate of Chapel Hill High School where she was a valuable member of the Ultimate (Frisbee) Team. She had a passion for rock sculpture, showcasing her creativity and artistic talent.
Known for her giving and conscientious nature, Mara was a curious learner and voracious reader, always seeking to expand her knowledge and understanding of the world. She was deeply committed to causes close to her heart, including the LGBTQ+ community and the ACLU. Mara's generosity extended beyond words, as she actively supported various charitable organizations, a testament to her compassionate spirit.
A private funeral service will be held at the Chapel Hill Zen Center to honor and celebrate Mara's life later this summer. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who were touched by her kindness, warmth, and unwavering dedication to making the world a better place.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chapel Hill Zen Center or any LGBTQ+ advocacy organization in Mara's memory.
