Martin "Marty" Joseph Hartwell, II

Martin “Marty” Joseph Hartwell, II, 55 of Durham, North Carolina was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 28, 2023.  Marty was born on May 22, 1968 in Royal Oak, Michigan to Larry and Janet Hartwell.

Marty was the proud co-owner of Precision Tune in Durham for 27 years and was a highly respected and sought after Master Mechanic.  He reveled in diagnosing computer, mechanical, and repair issues that often stumped others.  Marty shared brotherly bonds with his long-standing business partner and loyal team.  Customers became friends as his warm and honest approach was appreciated and admired. 

Marty was full of life, always had a smile on his face, and never met a stranger.  He was the first to offer help in any situation, and blessed with an abundance of energy and patience.  His fun-loving nature made him a joy to be around.  Marty held an unconditional love for his children, family, and friends.  He lived out his Christian faith through kindness, compassion, and placing the needs of others before his own. 

Marty loved the mountains, but motorcycles and cars were his true passions in life.  A Sunday afternoon was often spent watching sports including MotoGP and Formula 1 with a handful of peanuts.  He loved riding his motorcycle on the Blue Ridge Parkway or taking a day ride to Mount Airy and stopping for lunch.  Playing ball with his dog and “little buddy”, Archie, was the highlight at the end of both of their days.  Marty was a devoted and loving husband cherishing time together with his wife in the evenings with daily devotions and neighborhood walks.  He embraced the simple pleasures in life like reading a good book and listening to music while waxing and washing his car until it sparkled in the sun. 

Marty was preceded in death by his son, Andrew Hartwell.  He is survived by his loving wife of 9 years, Kelly Hartwell; sons, Christopher and Jason Hartwell; daughter, Elizabeth Hartwell; stepdaughter, Kayla Lechich (Anthony); parents, Larry and Janet Hartwell; sister, Julie Ducatte (Michael); brother, Lawrence Hartwell (Eydie); business partner, Bryan Yaffey; riding buddy, Joe Satterwhite and many adoring aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and brothers in Christ.

He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, loved him, and saw Jesus in him.  We are promised to see him again.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, November 10, 2023 at Grove Park Chapel, 605 Sherron Rd., Durham, NC 27703. Pastor Dale Brooks will officiate.
