Mary Kathleen Burgess

Mary Kathleen Sharpe Burgess (“Kathleen”) died on February 4, 2023, at 88 years old following a brave battle from congestive heart failure. She was the oldest of eight children born in Person County, NC to the late William and Alma Grinstead Sharpe.

She is also proceeded in death by her “special friend” Bobby Proctor Sr. as well as her brothers, Ed Sharpe and wife Lorraine, Lewis Sharpe, Raymond Sharpe and James Sharpe (Pat). Kathleen loved her siblings and was almost like a mother to them.

Mrs. Burgess is survived by her two children: Tammy Burgess Wall (Mike) and Phillip Ken Burgess. She adored her two grandchildren: Shawn Burgess (Dani) and Tiffany Burnette (Brandon), as well as her 6 great grandchildren. She has three surviving siblings: JC Sharpe (Frances Ann), Patsy Sharpe Vick (Reggie) and Karen Sharpe Campbell. Kathleen also had a special bond with her many nieces and nephews.

Kathleen was formerly from Durham, NC where she worked many years as a seamstress at Daniel Addison Designs. She was so talented with a needle and thread and could make just about anything!! Kathleen loved to line dance and enjoyed her Saturday nights in her cowgirl boots and hat. After retirement she moved to Nashville, NC in 2006 to be closer to family. She spent her days working in her yard and watching her beloved soaps.

In Kathleen’s honor, a funeral service will be held at Hudson Funeral Home in Durham, NC, Thursday, February 9, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

Burial will follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Chuck Hardee, Tommy Norris, Brandon Burnette, Brayden Burnette, Nick Campbell, and Shawn Burgess.

In lieu of flowers, Kathleen and family would like donations made to her church’s building fund in her name at: Southside Baptist Church 4948 Carter Rd Elm City, NC 27822.
