Mary Saunders

Mrs. Mary A. Saunders, 84 of Durham, NC, passed away June 17, 2024, at Duke Regional Hospital. 

Mrs. Saunders was born to the late Columbia and Gladys Huffman Saunders in Onslow County, North Carolina.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Saunders is preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Saunders and seven siblings.

She is survived by her sons, James “Jim” Saunders of Durham and Rob Saunders (Josie) of Emerald Isle, NC; daughter, Pamela Wheeler Bourgeois and husband Ray of Morehead City, NC; and special grandson, Malcolm Saunders of Scottsdale, AZ.; and lifetime friends, Julie Ray, Jane Kerr, Camilla Rich, and Lou Phillips.

Mrs. Saunders was a long-time resident of the Leesville Road community. She cared for generations of children in her home daycare for over 50 years. Mary enjoyed gardening and tending to flowers and fishing when she was younger. She attended Page Road Baptist Church. 

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mrs. Saunders memory to St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
