DURHAM Mr. Matthew “Manley” Johnson, 89, of Durham, died on Saturday, March 2, 2013.Mr. Johnson was born in Wake County, to the late Matthew Atkins Johnson and Rosa Lucas Johnson. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and retired from Liggett &Myers Tobacco Company. After retirement he worked for Hudson Funeral Home for 18 years. Manley had been a member of Angier Avenue Baptist Church since 1957. He served as a Deacon, Trustee, Scout Leader and Sunday School Teacher. He enjoyed reading the Bible, playing checkers, horseshoes and working in his garden. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Roberta Hall, Anna Mayes and Beulah Wilkins.He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Fannie George Johnson; two daughters, Teresa Paulette Woody and husband, Cary of Durham and Judy Johnson Wooden and husband, Sunny of Durham; two sisters, Eva McLean and Rosa Meredith both of Durham; grandchildren, Justin Kelly, Tyler Wooden (fiancée Stacey Frank), Andrew Wooden and step-granddaughter, Whitney Woody.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Angier Avenue Baptist Church. Rev. James Baggett and Rev. Kevin Byers will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Justin Kelly, Tyler Wooden, Andrew Wooden, Sunny Wooden, Cary Woody and Matthew “Matt” Meredith. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Hudson Funeral Home, employees of Hall-Wynne Funeral Home, Howerton Bryan Funeral Home and the Angier Ave. Baptist Church Cabin Class. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at the home.
