DURHAM Mrs. Melba Gunter Jones, 100, of Durham, departed this life on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, and went to be with the Lord.
Mrs. Jones was the daughter of the late Joseph Gunter and Edith Mims Gunter. Melba was an active member of Branson Memorial United Methodist Church for many years and in recent years belonged to Bethany United Methodist Church. Melba and her husband, Raymond operated Jones Poultry Company in Durham for many years. Melba’s hobbies filled her days after retirement. She enjoyed painting and candle making and she was active in church work. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Lewis Jones; two brothers, Garland Gunter and Elmond Gunter; sister, Leta Browning and several nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Jones Ammons, her grandson, Geoffrey Niles Ammons and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery. Rev. Jimmy Weaver will officiate. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., before the service at Hudson Funeral Home. Flowers are acceptable or donations can be made to the Bethany United Methodist Church, 2809 Guess Road, Durham, NC 27705 for the Building Fund.
