Michael Robert Volow

Durham

Michael Volow, MD, 86, died at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, N.C. on February 16th, 2024. Michael was the son of the late George and Anita Volow of Kings Park, on Long Island N.Y. He very much enjoyed teaching the newly evolving neuropsychiatry to medical students and psychiatric residents at the Durham North Carolina Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center and at Duke University.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rebecca Volow. He is also survived by one child, llan Volow, of Pittsburgh, P.A.; and 3 grandsons, Ari, Jonah, and Alex, also of Pittsburgh. He is also survived by his sister, Lisa Volow Golombek, of Toronto. 

He graduated from Oberlin College, Ohio 1959; and from New Jersey College of Medicine at Newark, N.J. in 1964. Michael and Rebecca were married October 1966 during his tour as a Navy flight surgeon at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California 1966-1968. Michael completed a psychiatric residency and fellowship in psychiatry at Duke University in 1972. He was fascinated by unusual neuropsychiatric conditions, such as blepharospasm, psychiatric aspects of epilepsy; and the emerging knowledge about neuropsychiatric conditions such as frontal lobe syndromes. His graveside service will be at Judea Reform Cemetery on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. Officiating will be Rabbi Matthew Soffer.
