Durham- Millard Alford Shearin, 94, of Durham died on Thursday, February 4, 2016. He was the son of the late Cornwallis Shearin and Viola Alford Shearin. He was born in Nash County on December 12, 1921. He moved to Wake County when he was six years old and graduated from Rolesville High School in 1940. He joined the US Army in 1940 and served for 5 years, attaining rank of Staff Sergeant as a surgical technician. During World War II, he served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He received an EAMET Campaign medal and bronze service stars and an American Defense medal. After the war he moved to Durham and used the GI bill to become an optician. He was employed by American Optical Company for over 35 years where he rose to manager. He attended Grove Park Chapel for many years and served as an elder.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Virginia Perry Shearin and a brother James Brooks Shearin. He is survived by two daughters, Jean Shearin of Durham; Nancy Shuler and her husband Barry of Hillsborough; and one son Wallace Shearin of Burlington; four grandchildren, Laura Brown and husband Joseph Brown, Robert Shearin and wife Lauren Shearin; Evan Shuler and Mason Shuler, and one great-grandchild Morgan Rae Brown.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 8, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Grove Park Chapel. Pastor Dale Brooks will officiate. Graveside burial will be after the services on Monday, February 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Wake Cross Road Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Monday, February 8, 2016 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. one hour prior to the services at Grove Park Chapel. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: Grove Park Chapel, 605 Sherron Rd., Durham, NC 27703. Online condolences can be made at www.hudsonfuneralhome.com.
