Nellie Olive Harward

DURHAM Mrs. Nellie Wayne Olive Harward, 82, died at home on Thursday, January 11, 2018.

She was born on January 15, 1935 to the late Claude and Viola Valera Olive in Durham, North Carolina, and was a lifelong resident. She retired after many years from GTE as a Supervisor in the Personnel Department. After retirement she was Administative Assistant for Parkview Baptist Church for 17 years. She was a former member of Plainview Baptist Church and a current member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. Nellie was known for her kind, generous and humble spirit. She spent many hours volunteering at her church and at the Oak Grove Ruritan Club, where she also served as the secretary for several years. She had a servant’s heart and always had a word of encouragement for her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by those left behind. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Joseph Harward and a brother, Winfred Olive.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Diane Ray (D. B.); her two sons, Noel Duane Harward (Stephanie) and William Douglas Harward (Kim); five grandchildren, Kristie Glover (Paul), Erica Farmer, Melissa Harward, Holly Dennis (Kerry) and Jonathan Harward; five great-grandchildren, Kaden Broadwell, Crawford Farmer, Mason Farmer, Gavin Dennis and Harlynne Broadwell.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. Rev. David Duncan and Rev. Jody Griffin will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Pallbearers will be Danny Tharrington, Charlie Tharrington, Chester Rives, Tommy Dempsey, Larry Oakley and Danny McGee. Honorary pallbearers will be the member of the Friendship Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12 to 1 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 1204 Lynn Road, Durham, NC 27703. Online condolences can be made at www.hudsonfuneralhome.com.
