DURHAM Mrs. Nellie Turner Higgs, 97, of Durham, died on Tuesday, October 3, 2017.
Mrs. Higgs was born in Granville County, the daughter of the late James Robert Turner and Mittie Lee Trevathan Turner. She was employed with Durham Hosiery Mill and also was a homemaker. She and her husband were co-founders of the First Assembly of God, where she was a member and sang in a trio for the church. She loved flowers and gardening. Mrs. Higgs was preceded in death by her husband, Cornelius Higgs; grandchild, Jamie Vickers and eleven brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her two sons, Norman R. Higgs and wife, Ann of Granville County, Marshall D. Higgs and wife, Deborah of Durham; two daughters, Linda H. Vickers and husband, Jimmy and Melody H. Blomberg and husband, Sven all of Durham; sister, Ruby T. Capps of Durham; grandchildren, Cindy Powers, Scott Higgs, Tabitha Osborne, Michael Higgs, Christopher Vickers, Andrew Blomberg, Stephen Blomberg, April Blomberg, Alex Blomberg, Annette M. Smith, Tammy S. Rokose, Chad Vickers (Rolyn) and Starlena Barnes; 16 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 1 p.m. at the First Assembly of God. Rev. Denver Shelton and Rev. Don Westbrook will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Scott Higgs, Michael Higgs, Andrew Blomberg, Stephen Blomberg, Alex Blomberg and Chad Vickers. Honorary pallbearers will be Christopher Vickers and Scott Perry.
The family will receive friends on Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, Linda Vickers, 318 Crestview Drive in Durham.
