Norma Jean R. Wagstaff

Durham – Norma Jean Rigsbee Wagstaff passed away peacefully with her family by her
side on March 21, 2016 after a brief period of declining health.
She was born on July 27, 1932 in Durham, NC to the late Hubert Lennox Rigsbee and
Hettie Oakley Rigsbee. She graduated from Durham High School in 1950 where she
was a majorette on the high school band marching team. She was employed with
Liggett & Myers for a number of years before leaving to raise her only child, Marla.
Norma Jean perfected her pound cake recipe and enjoyed baking cakes for many
people on their birthday’s and other occasions. She was always appreciative of anyone
helping her around her house and readily expressed her appreciation with a slice of
cake. She was a member of the former Gospel Center in Durham. For many years she
made regular donations to various Christian organizations, Veterans of Foreign Wars
and Paralyzed Veterans. She was a devoted wife and mother and had a strong
Christian faith.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Marla and Michael Tilley, brother H.L.
Rigsbee, several nieces and one nephew.
Norma Jean is predeceased by her husband, Russell L. Wagstaff, and sisters, Helen
Lumsden, Betsy Smith-Muir, Judy Hamrick.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Maplewood
Cemetery. Officiating will be the Reverend William Richardson. The family
will receive visitors Wednesday evening from 6-8 PM at the Hudson Funeral Home.
Marla wishes to thank Mike for his unwavering devotion not only throughout the years,
but especially during the last two months and to Lisa and Leigh Ann for reasons they
know in their hearts.
Pallbearers will be Michael Tilley, Erik Daubert, John Johnson, Gerry Grubb, Tyler
Noblitt and Tommy McCorkle.
