Shirley Porter Spalding

Durham, NC - Shirley Porter Spalding, beloved mother and grandmother passed away on July 9, 2023. She was born on February 16, 1948, in Durham to the late Seth Owen Porter and Tiny Maynard Porter.

Shirley dedicated her life to her family, finding immense joy in being a mother to her two children, Wanda Ray Mitchell and the late Joesph Ray. She took great pride in her grandchildren, Jonathan Mitchell, Dawn Mitchell, Chad Ray, Justin Ray, and Ashley Ray, who brought abundant happiness to her heart. Shirley was also a loving sister, and she joins her siblings in eternal rest. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Porter, and sisters Alma Porter Grimsley and Kathleen Porter Mayse. 

In her professional career, Shirley worked for many years at GTE. Her devotion to her church was unwavering, finding solace and guidance in her faith. Shirley had a deep affection for animals, and her compassionate spirit extended to all creatures great and small.

Shirley Porter Spalding will be deeply missed, but her legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate to have known her.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 13, 2023 at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
