S. Swain Pierce died peacefully Saturday, November 26, 2016, at PruittHealth-Raleigh. Born January 5, 1923, in Franklin County, NC, Swain was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Florence Poole Pierce and the youngest of eight siblings, all deceased. A graduate of Bunn High School and Mitchell Junior College (Statesville), Swain, a talented pianist, studied music which he enjoyed his entire life. He later embarked on a career in accounting and worked in Raleigh retiring from FCX Corporation in 1985 with 38 years of service. A resident of the Hi-Mount Neighborhood in North Raleigh, Swain will be remembered fondly by neighbors and those he met on his daily walks. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh.
Swain is survived by his wife of 69 years, Roberta Casper Pierce, his son, Mark Swain Pierce and wife, Kathy, of Cary, and grandsons, Mark Stephen Pierce and wife, Megan, of Berryville, Virginia, and Samuel Josiah Pierce of Lynchburg, Virginia.
A graveside funeral service will be held 2 PM Tuesday, November 29, 2016, Brier Creek Memorial Gardens, 7600 ACC Blvd., Raleigh, NC 27617.
