Spencer Cohen

Spencer Barry Cohen (Age 74) of Chapel Hill, NC, passed away peacefully at home on June 15, 2016, after a long battle with cancer. Beloved husband of Lucy and devoted father of Justin Cohen (Lisa), Marcy McAfee, and Dana Cohen. Cherished grandfather of Tyler and Julia McAfee. Also survived by his mother Esther Kalin, brother Allen Cohen (Sheila), and brother-in-law Jack Kornblau (Peggy).
Born in Philadelphia, PA, and raised in Atlantic City, NJ, Spencer received both bachelor and graduate degrees from Rutgers University. He and Lucy first met in elementary school in Atlantic City and were lifelong sweethearts. Spencer began a long career as an agricultural economist with Rhone-Poulenc in New Jersey before relocating in 1987 to work at the company’s Research Triangle Park campus. He remained with the company through many mergers and retired in 2011 from Bayer Crop Science. Spencer’s community activities included belonging to the Optimist Club.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 17, at 2 p.m. at Markham Memorial Gardens in Chapel Hill. Family will be observing Shiva at the residence on Saturday, June 18. Memorial contributions may be made to Cornucopia Cancer Support Center and the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
