Stepheny “Iris” Currie

Stepheny “Iris” Thomas Currie, 83, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, March 10, 2016. She was born on September 15th 1932 and the daughter of the late Isaac Leon Thomas and Sudie Mae Crabtree Thomas. She was a lifelong resident of Durham and member of Sherron Acres Free Will Baptist Church where she served on many committees and enjoyed the fellowship and love with her church family. She attended Bethesda School. Iris will be remembered as a very loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Iris especially loved spending time with her children and grandchildren at Holden Beach. She grew up and lived in the community of Sherron Acres, where she loved spending many hours in her beautiful garden. All who knew her loved her home cooking and highly coveted her homemade Brunswick Stew. She was an avid sports fan and a die-hard Duke Fan.Iris was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years Robert Duncan Currie Sr. Her brother, Leon Francis Thomas and her sister Delores Thomas Eubanks. Iris is survived by her four children, Robert Duncan Currie, Jr. and wife, Linda of Wilmington, Stephen Thomas Currie Sr. of Shallotte; Deborah Currie Goss and husband, Sammy, of Durham and Jennifer Currie Detweiler and husband, Eddie, of Durham. Grandchildren, Stephen Thomas Currie Jr., Christopher Brian Currie and wife Nicki, Samuel Wallace Goss III, Robert William Goss and wife, Chrissie, Stephanie Detweiler Bridges and husband Steven, Chelsea Alexis Detweiler, all of Durham and Shannon Kaye Currie of Wilmington and great-grandchildren, Kaelie Marie Goss, Chloe Grace Currie, Sebastian Thomas Currie and Kendal Rae Goss. She is also survived by half siblings, Evelyn Chang, Duane Choplin & Wesley Choplin of Cleveland, Tennessee. Active pallbearers are grandsons Christopher Currie, Robbie Goss, Stephen Currie, Steven Bridges, and nephews Guy Eubanks, Eddie Eubanks, Martin Perry and Denny Temple.Visitation will be Friday, March 11th at Hudson Funeral Home in Durham from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 12th at Hudson Funeral Home at 10am, followed by graveside service at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. Reverend Fred Johnson will officiate.The family would like to thank all of the special friends who helped care for our mama. She was such an influential and precious gift in our lives & will be greatly missed. Flowers are acceptable.
