DURHAM, Steven Lee (Steve) Mitchell, Duke fan, athlete, hero and our brother passed away after a brief illness. Steve was a resident of Spring Glen Retirement Community of Residential Services, Inc.Steve was born on September 5, 1954 in Durham County. He was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church. He attended Durham County Schools and received a certificate when he graduated in 1974. Steve worked at Durham Exchange Club Industries (DECI) where he retired after 32 years of service. He was a member of the Durham County Special Olympics Golf Team and was a gold medal recipient. He was preceded to heaven by his parents O.C. Mitchell, Jr., Nellie Grace May Mitchell, his brother Don Newton Mitchell and wife Joan.He is survived by his family members, O. Crafton Mitchell, III (Carol) of Roxboro, Phyllis Anne Mitchell Stubbins (Eddie) of Mooresville, NC, Janice May Mitchell King (Clint) of Timberlake, NC, Candace Elizabeth Mitchell Black (Barry) of Durham, NC; nephews and nieces, Janna Mitchell Elliott (Craig), Phil Mitchell (Charlene), Anne Stubbins Powers (John), Mike Mitchell (Veronica) Ed Stubbins (Ashley), Heath King (Megan), Seth King (Cathy), Whitney Black Pennell (Nathan).Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens, 7600 ACC Blvd, Raleigh, NC 27617. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Bethesda Baptist Church 1914 S. Miami Blvd, Durham NC 27703, with a Celebration of Life lunch to follow. All are invited. At other times the family will be at the home of his sister, 237 Fork Junction Road Timberlake, NC.The family would like to thank the staff of Spring Glen for the love and support they have always shown Steve and his family. A special thanks to Coach K for allowing Steve to sit behind the bench for many years.
