Virginia Ellis "Sue" Poe

Mrs. Virginia “Sue” Ellis Poe, 70, of Bahama, NC passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2023, at Duke University Hospital.  She succumbed to severe heart failure, diagnosed only days before going to be with the Lord.

Sue was born February 20, 1953, in Durham, NC to the late Dempsey and Annie Mae Yeargin Ellis.

In addition to her parents, Sue was predeceased by her brother, Russell Ellis and a sister-in-law, Hazel Ellis.

She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Gerald Poe; brothers, Jack D. Ellis of Bahama, NC and Roger Ellis of Durham,NC; sister, Della Ellis Whitfield (Bert)  of Bahama, NC; nephews, Kyle Whitfield, Daniel Sexton, Ricky Shepherd, and Marty Ellis; niece, Cindy Ellis; great niece, Taylor Parks (Michael); newborn great great niece, Madelyn Parks.

Sue was known as a kind and generous person, who never met a stranger.  She was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying deer and turkey hunting, fishing, arrowhead collecting and nature in general. Her hunting skills often gave her bragging rights over her male counterparts.  In 1986 she won the ‘Number One for Female in the State of NC, Big Buck Contest’.

 In addition, she would spoil any person or animal that she came in contact with.  Her furry friends included her cat, Miss Kitty, and  Flag, a deer she rescued as a day old fawn. If you were in her presence, she would get her cell phone and show pictures and video of Flag. Sue had a special skill of rehabilitating orphaned animals and birds.

A graveside service will be held Monday, December 11, 2023, at 3 p.m. at Ellis Chapel UMC Cemetery. Officiating will be Pastor Randy Youmans. Visitation with the family will be at the home of her sister, Della, at 2517 Ellis Chapel Rd., Bahama, NC.

Flowers are acceptable or donations can be made in Sue’s memory to Shepherd’s Angel, 609 George Sherman Rd., Rougemont, NC  27572.  Shepherd’s Angel is a nonprofit foundation supporting patients and families affected by cancer.
