Mr. Wallace Reid Inscoe, 96, of Durham, NC, passed away March 28, 2023.
Wallace was born May 8, 1926, in Durham, NC to the late Howard Ozer and Lettie Long Inscoe. In addition to his parents, Mr. Inscoe was preceded in death by his wife, Doris George Inscoe; son, Kenneth R. Inscoe; brothers, Thomas J. Inscoe and Howard O. Inscoe, Jr.; and grandchildren, Chad Champion and Jessica Jones.
Wallace enlisted in the United States Navy at age 18, and proudly served his country in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Afterwards, he continued supporting the armed forces as a Charter Member in the American Legion Post 416 for over 70 years. Wallace returned from war and joined his father in the family meatpacking and wholesale business, then known as H.O. Inscoe and Sons, servicing grocers and restaurants with wholesale meat products. In the 60’s, he founded Bethesda Provision Co. Inc., best known for their country sausage. He was famous for his grilling talents and known for his BBQ sauce, Brunswick Stew, and Liver Pudding. Wallace was always very supportive in his community, and of the surrounding small businesses.
Wallace was an avid John Wayne fan and demonstrated similar traits of loyalty, self-reliance, grit, patriotism, honesty, and generosity. He was a huge sports fan, especially of his beloved Duke Blue Devils, Atlanta Braves, and Durham Bulls. Annual family vacations at Carolina Beach were always a priority, for a week of relaxation, surf fishing, and fun.
Wallace cared deeply for friends and family, and loved them unconditionally. He was affectionately nicknamed “Grubworm,” “Lil General,” “Peanut,” and “The Original Meatman.” He will be missed by all.
He is survived by his daughters, Donna Inscoe (Pete Oakley), Teresa Jones, Tammy Champion (Gary), and Julia Inscoe; grandchildren, Karen Inscoe Walls, Kurt Inscoe, Paul Jones, Rachel Champion Watson (Robert); great-grandchildren, Kenneth Walls, Taylor Walls, Jayce Inscoe, Sidney Inscoe, Chad Shepard, Khloe Watson, and Saydie Watson; great-great-grandson, Orian Lauva; as well as other loving family members and friends.
Serving as Pallbearers will be Kurt Inscoe, Paul Jones, Robert Watson, Kenneth Walls, Chad Shepard, and Daniel Oakley. American Legion Post 416 will also serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Sunday, April 2, 2023, at Hudson Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 3, 2023, at Hudson Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Jonathan Barbee. Burial will follow at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens.
Flowers are acceptable or memorial contributions can be directed to American Legion Post 416, 5419 S Alston Ave, Durham, NC 27713, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, ALSAC/501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or any Veterans Organization of your choice.
The children will received friends at their childhood home, 2810 Glover Road, Durham, NC 27703.
