DURHAM- Walter M. Sams, 85, of Durham passed away on Saturday, April 30. 2016. He lived in Durham since 1948. Walter was the son of the late Carlos Franklin Sams and Beatrice Rogers Sams. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, he served in the Korean War. Walter was a disabled American Veterans/The Order of the Purple Heart 75th Rangers Battalion 24th Division. Second Infantry Division 1 Korean War Branch. Achievements, Purple Heart, DSC/Bronze Star/Silver Star, Distinquished Service Cross He was also a member of the American Legion and VFW. Walter loved to place flags on gravesites and organizing Veteran Ceremonies. He never met a stranger that he didn’t like and always helped others. Walter retired from Wrights Machinery Co. and Walmart. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Zoria (Sis) Williams and Etrulia Bundick.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary; daughters, Debra Sams of Durham; Sonya Sams of Durham; brother, Joseph Sams (Darlene) of Durham; sisters, Hershell J. House of Hillsborough; Faye Way of Hillsborough; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Reverend Jerry Hooper and Reverend Craig Phelps will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Wayne Nance, David , Larry, Randy Chappell, and Barry Glenn.
The family will receive friends on Monday, May 2, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at his sister-in-law Ruby Nance’s house. The family would like to give a special thanks to Kindred-Rose Manor for their love and care and Transitions Hospice in his final hours.
