William D. (Bill) Weatherspoon

WEATHERSPOONDURHAM Mr. William D. (Bill) Weatherspoon, 76, of Durham, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at his home. Bill was born on January 14, 1936 in Durham to the late Robert Lee Weatherspoon, Sr. and Elma Douglas Weatherspoon. He attended Durham City Schools, graduating from Durham High School in 1955. He attended Wake Forest University on football scholarship. After college he served in the N. C. National Guard for 6 years. Bill always had a passion for UNC sports, playing football in his high school years and was the best halfback the Durham Bulldogs ever had He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Massey. He went on to work for Commercial Equipment Company as a service technician. He then moved on and became a substitute school teacher at Southern High School. Bill was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time at his beach house with his family. He was preceded in death by his brother, Rev. Robert L. Weatherspoon, Jr.He is survived by his wife, Mary Massey Weatherspoon, son, William Douglas Weatherspoon, Jr. and wife, Peggy; daughter, Susan Weatherspoon Bolton and husband, Tim; two grandchildren, Allison Weatherspoon and Blade T. Bolton; two step-grandchildren, Billy Hart and Katie Oltmans and a great-granddaughter, Ivy Oltmans.Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Good Hope Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Jody Griffin. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home.
