William (Bill) Thomas Elliott, age 76, passed away on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at his home in Mebane.
A native of Durham, he was the son of the late Carvie and Missie Clements Elliott and was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda Roberts Elliott. Early in his career, he hand lettered billboards for Long-Meadow Dairies, Pepsi, and many others. He was well known for lettering race cars for local drivers. He loved lettering race cars but because of the onset of his disease (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) which affected his eye sight, he had to give up painting. In his younger days, he participated in short-track racing at Orange County Speedway. He retired from Nortel in 2002. Bill was a long-time member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church. In 2006, Bill married Gladys Fowler Moore and moved to Mebane where he joined Edgewood Baptist Church, where he was active until the time of his illness.
