Carroll Lee Rabon, Jr.A memorial service for Mr. Carroll Lee Rabon, Jr., 79, will be held at Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church, Durham, NC on Monday, September 12, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow.Born July 22, 1932 in Salisbury, NC, Carroll was the son of Carroll Lee Rabon, Sr., and Margie Wilson Rabon. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald Wilson Rabon.Mr. Rabon attended Salisbury (NC) public schools and later graduated from High Point College. After teaching at Tri-City School (Eden,NC), he graduated with Master’s degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of South Carolina in Columbia.Mr. Rabon taught at St. John’s River Jr. College, Palatka, FL before he became the Chairman of the Math and Science Department at Ferrum College in VA. He served as Vice-President for Business Affairs for 17 years and later returned to his first love, the classroom. Also at Ferrum, he coached both the offensive and defensive line in football. He was inducted into the Ferrum College Sports Hall of Fame in October, 2009. He retired from Ferrum in 2002, and taught part-time at Patrick Henry Community College, Martinsville, Va.Mr. Rabon was active in many civic activities. He was a Past Master of Rocky Mount (VA) Masonic Lodge, Past Worthy Patron of Rocky Mount (VA), O.E.S., Past Associate Bethel Guardian of International Order of Job’s Daughters, Bethel #7, Roanoke, VA, Past Master of the Scottish Rite, Roanoke, VA, Kazim Temple of Roanoke, VA, 33rd degree Master Mason of Virginia. Past President of the Scottish Rite Conference of Virginia. He served as Past Chairman, Franklin County VA Highway Safety Commission, Past Chairman Ferrum Water and Sewer Authority, Past President Franklin Co. (VA) Band Boosters, Guide/Volunteer D-Day Memorial, Bedford, VA. He was a proud member of the UNC Rams Club, a Colonel in the Kentucky Colonels, Member American Legion, Post 1971, Durham, NC.During the Korean conflict, Mr. Rabon served in the US Army and continued this service in the NC National Guard, retiring as a Master Sergeant.Mr. Rabon is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gloria Davis Rabon, two daughters, Lynda Rabon McNeely and husband, James, of Durham, NC and Susan Rabon McCandless and husband Mark of Preston, Maryland. He is also survived by his sister, Elaine Rabon Salomon and husband James, of Bristol, RI, and his mother-in-law, Gladys B. Davis of New Bern, and a number of nieces and nephews.The family wishes to offer their sincere appreciation to the staff of Seasons at Southpoint and Treyburn Nursing Center.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hank Norton Sports Center, Ferrum College, Ferrum, Va or the BackPack Program at Mt.
