Claiborne Edward Ellis, Sr.

July 9, 1928 — January 7, 2014

CREEDMOOR Mr. Claiborne Edward Ellis, Sr., 85, of 1576 Munns Road, died on Tuesday, January 7, 2014.
Mr. Ellis was a native and lifelong resident of Durham, the son of the late Bunnie M. Ellis and Ethel Seagroves Ellis. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army. He worked for Western Electric for 15 years and owned and operated Ellis Insurance Agency. He was a Sudan Shriner and Past President of the Durham Shrine Club. He was a Mason and was a member of Fellowship Lodge 687.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley Barbee Ellis; one son, Claiborne Ellis, Jr. of Creedmoor; one daughter, Sue Colenda and husband, Steve of Oxford; sister, Kathy E. Strayhorn and husband, James of Durham; five grandchildren, Steve Colenda, Britt Colenda, Lauren Colenda, Brandon Ellis and Brittany Ellis; five great-grandchildren, Jada, Jennah, Jolie Colenda, Mylie Ellis and Bentley Dillard.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at his home, 1576 Munns Road in Creedmoor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605 or Amedisys Hospice, 2609 Duke Street, Suite 102, Durham, NC 27704.
