RALEIGH- Mr. Joseph “Joe” William Carter, Jr., 86, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2019.
Mr. Carter was born on March 16, 1933 to the late Joseph and Elizabeth “Annie” Carter in Fayetteville, NC. Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was co-owner and operator of S. Swartz & Sons from which he retired after 50 years. Joe was a member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, NC. He loved fishing and his boat, hunting, fixing things, and the beach. Mr. Carter will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Mr. Carter is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sheila Swartz Carter; son, Joseph “Joe” William Carter, III. (Caryn) of Green Bay, WI; daughters, Elizabeth “Liz” Carter of Raleigh, NC, and Mary Carter Hudson (O. Thomas “Tommy”, Jr.) of Cary, NC; brothers, Charles S. Carter of Southern Pines, NC, and Thomas Martin “Tommy” Carter of Wake Forest, NC; sister, Jacqueline C. Coughenour of Candor, NC; grandchildren, Joseph William Carter, IV., Catherine Ann Carter, Lauren Clare Carter, and Olivia “Brooke” Hudson; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 17, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held an hour prior from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Officiating will be Reverend Hugh O’Shields. Pallbearers will be Joe Carter, III., Joseph Carter, IV., Tommy Carter, Hank Swartz, and Tommy Hudson. Honorary pallbearers will be former employees of S. Swartz & Sons.
