I was so glad to have known Nancy having worked with her at Duke's Foundation Relations department for a few years. Her guffaw-like chuckle whenever anyone would say anything incredulous still makes me smile. She gave me some sage advice early on and gently repeated it whenever I needed it, "Dan, don't sweat the small stuff...because it's all small stuff." Kind, generous, and always considerate. Thank you, Nancy. My heartfelt condolences.

Dear Hillsman Family, I am deeply sorry to hear of Nancy's passing. She was a wonderful colleague, always friendly and gracious. We will always think of her during our Holiday Cookie exchange and Thanksgiving potluck. Her cookies were nothing short of amazing, and she won Best Baker many years in a row. We will miss her. We are praying for your family and hope you find comfort in the days ahead. Best, Jane Heuser

I met Nancy at a friend's birthday dinner during our library school days. We hit it off right away! NCCU crew for life! We ran a 5k together one year and I remember her cheering me on as I was struggling to make it through. Lol While I wasn't proud of my results, she still congratulated me on doing a great job and I'll never forget that. Just a sweet person all around; she will be greatly missed.

All of us at Peace Covenant Church will miss Nancy so much! As a founding member of the church, she has been an integral part of our congregation by providing delicious food for our potluck meals, financial stability as treasurer for nearly the entire existence of the church, and her kind and gentle spirit of support through the years. Our prayers go out to Phil, Amy, David, and the rest of her family.

Nancy and I grew up in the same community--Figsboro. We attended Jones Chapel Church of the Brethren and had tons of fun especially during vacation bible school. We attended Laurel Park High School were we were members of the cheerleading squad. I still live in Martinsville and pass by Nancy's childhood home almost on a daily basis. Fly high sweet friend.

Phillip Buchanan left a message on June 16, 2021:
Nancy always brought a ray of sunshine into every room she entered, uplifting everyone with inner and outer beauty, along with her kind and gentle spirit. I see mention of her winning the Duke Development cookie completion, twice… but let it be known that she also won most, and never placed out of the top three, of every other Duke “cook-off” - from chili to Thanksgiving desserts. She was a culinary champion of the highest order (and never ridiculed me for bringing my “homemade” key lime pie in a Costco box each year!). We shared many common experiences from growing up in western Virginia, including folks we knew in Martinsville, and our respective times at King College. Nancy was loved, respected, immensely valued as a trusted friend and peer, by countless people. She lived a life well marked by good deeds, accomplishments and a ripple effect that made this world a better place. May God hold her close in his loving embrace of a truly deserving soul.
Joan Cope left a message on June 16, 2021:
Nancy was the kind of person who had a gentle and loving soul. She always tried to see the best in people and she loved her family and friends unconditionally. She had a quiet but strong faith in God which she demonstrated in many ways. She had a servant heart and she was always going above and beyond in the area of hospitality. She loved to make goodies and special meals for our family get togethers in Montreat or at the beach! She always tried to make things special for all of the many cousins. She loved dancing to some of the "oldies" from the 60s and 70s. She loved music and enjoyed singing. We will miss her so much and in so many ways. We grieve with Philip, Amy, David, and Dede and all of her family and the many, many friends who loved her. Praying for God's peace and comfort during this very sad and difficult time.
Mike Thornton left a message on June 16, 2021:
